Overcome Self-Doubt | A 3-Minute Read

If you often find yourself wondering, ‘why others seem to have gone ahead in life, while you have not’ you are experiencing a very common issue i.e., self-doubt. Doubting yourself is one of the fastest ways to lose confidence, feel guilty, burn out, and sabotage your own growth. In the next 3 minutes, I will share couple of simple ways to overcome this and start building unshakable confidence.

self doubt

In my three decades of coaching, I’ve seen brilliant people undermine their own progress simply because of self-doubt. One of the most common causes is having at least one parent who was too hard, too critical, or too judgmental. I have coached people who were scolded for scoring “98 out of 100” in mathematics instead of being praised for their achievement.

They were shouted at for small mistakes but rarely complimented for doing well. Constantly compared to others for their shortcomings, yet seldom recognized for their strengths, they grew up doubting themselves.

Remember, what you focus on expands. When you focus on weaknesses or setbacks, your brain shows you more of them. But when you focus on your strengths, skills, and potential, you begin to experience more of that instead.

Confidence doesn’t come from measuring up to others—it comes from recognizing your own progress and using it as fuel to grow further.

Starting today, take just three minutes each day before you go to sleep and recall, in as much vivid detail as you can, three of your own successes. They don’t have to be big. Finishing a task, keeping your word, or speaking up when you felt nervous all count as real successes. Write down, if you can in a notebook.

Additionally, every time you look in the mirror, take a moment, look into your own eyes and say something positive, like “I believe in you” or “I trust you.” a few times. Speak loud enough that you can hear yourself.

As you do this daily, you train your brain to notice your own strengths and progress instead of constantly comparing yourself to others. Over time, this simple practice builds confidence, resilience, and mental strength.

At first, it may feel odd or unnatural, and you might even notice some resistance. That’s normal—it actually means you are doing it right. Keep practicing this daily until it starts to feel natural.
